SOSS launches Journal of Social Transformation

The School of Social Sciences launched its new publication, the Journal of Social Transformation (JST), on September 9, 2011at PLDT-CTC Room 201.The JST is  a refereed journal which replaces the Loyola Schools Review (LSR) Social Sciences Edition.

By way of introduction, editor Dr. Joseph Lim of the Department of Economics spoke of the history of the journal and the personalities who contributed to its conceptualization and production.

He credited former Vice President for the Loyola Schools Dr. Ma. Assunta Cuyegkeng with coming up with the idea of the journal, and with thinking up the journal’s name as well. In envisioning the journal, they had the assistance of Dr. Erwin Enriquez of the Department of Chemistry and Dr. Melissa J. Macapagal of the Department of Psychology.

Lim thanked SOSS Dean Fr. Jose M. Cruz, SJ, VPLS Dr. John Paul Vergara, and Associate Dean for Research and Creative Work Dr. Armando Guidote, Jr. for their support.

He acknowledged incoming JST Dr. Roberto Benedicto for doing “most of the work” in producing the journal, with the help of layout artist Robbie Reyes of the Department of Theology, cover photographer Ernie Sarmiento of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and the Ateneo de Manila University Press.

Benedicto, for his part, spoke on future directions for the journal as well as the expanded editorial board. He shared plans for special issues, including ones on postcoloniality and memory and human rights in the Asia Pacific region.

Editors Lim and Benedicto, Dr. Emma Porio, authors Mendiola Teng-Calleja, Dr. Gina Hechanova, and Dr. Rosalina Palanca-Tan, Dr. Marlu Vilches, Dr. John Paul Vergara, Fr. Joey Cruz

In their addresses, SOSS dean Fr. Jose M. Cruz and SOH dean Dr. Maria Luz Vilches, who is officer-in-charge for the OVPLS, reflected on the role of individual awakening in the process of social transformation.

Cruz commented on how people’s belief in their ability to change themselves and the conditions surrounding them is a sense that is deeply ingrained within them.

Vilches remarked on how publishing a journal is itself an act of social transformation. As its effects on people’s minds and ideas deepen, social transformation is evoked and provoked, she said.
