I am pleased to inform the community that the Ateneo de Manila Board of Trustees appointed Dr Filomeno V Aguilar Jr as Dean of the School of Social Sciences (SOSS), Loyola Schools for an initial 3-year period from 1 April 2012 to 31 March 2015.

Incoming SOSS Dean Dr. Filomeno V. Aguilar, Jr.

Dr Aguilar graduated BS Management Engineering, cum laude, Ateneo de Manila University, 1977; and MS Economics, University of Wales, 1980. He acquired his PhD in Development Sociology from Cornell University in 1992.

He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Philippine Studies.  He has been actively engaged in research on Filipino migrants and transnational cultures.  Among his most recent publications include: “The Riddle of the Alien-Citizen: Filipino Migrants as US Nationals and the Anomalies of Citizenship, 1900s-1930s”, Asian and Pacific Migration Journal, 19 (2010), 203-236; “The Pacto de Sangre in the Late Nineteenth-Century Nationalist Emplotment of Philippine History”, Philippine Studies, 58 (2010), 79-109; “Maalwang Buhay: Family, Overseas Migration, and Cultures of Relatedness in Barangay Paraiso”, Ateneo de Manila University Press, 2009.

We thank Dr Aguilar for accepting this new appointment.  As he takes on the deanship of the School of Social Sciences, Dr Aguilar will be tasked to enhance collaboration among the different departments of the SOSS, and advance inter-disciplinary research and publications.

On behalf of the Ateneo de Manila, I am deeply grateful to Fr Jose M Cruz SJ for leading the School in the last 12 years.  During his term, the SOSS grew substantially with the development of new undergraduate and graduate programs, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and strong international linkages.

For your information and guidance.
