Student teams from the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM) bagged two of the ten awards given during the Business in Development (BiD) Challenge organized by the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP). The awarding ceremony was held May 30, 2012 at the One Esplanade, SM Central Business Park in Manila.
The two Ateneo teams which received awards were Habi Footwear and Haw Blends, which started as a class project of the LS127 I – Strategy Implementation: Social Enterprise Track mentored by Mr. Jose Gerardo Cruz, faculty member of the Leadership and Strategy Deparment of the JGSOM. There were 29 entries in all.

Haw Blends’ objective is to help carabao farmers at Brgy. Puncan, Carrangalan, Nueva Ecija by marketing their milk products. The group is composed of AB Management Economics 2012 graduates Clarisa Belo, Ann Margaret Chu, Anna Bianca Continuado, Kristine Nicole Domingo, Isabel Lynda Lagunzad, Paulynn Lentejas, and Samantha Marie Libunao.
Habi Footwear is an eco-friendly footwear retail startup that helps mothers of Kawan ni Sto. Nino Community under the Diocese of Novaliches. The team is composed of BS Management 2012 graduates Albert Jonathan Go, Janine Mikaella Chiong, Kathleen Rose Kho, Rona Francia Palines, Bernadee Uy, and BS Management of Applied Chemistry 2012 graduate Maria Paulina Savillo.
Start-up funding from Citibank
The BiD Challenge awarded ten winners with a cash grant of Php 100,000.00 each from Citibank to serve as seed funding for start-up enterprises and organizations that require additional funding to expand their businesses.
In addition to the cash grant, the Habi Footwear team was also chosen as one of the top two winners to compete in the international round of the challenge at the Netherlands in November of this year.
Other winners BiD Challenge Philippines were: Donnabelle Coconut Sugar and Syrup; Batangueno’s Best Prime Ground Roasted Coffee with Pandan Extract; Deo’s AquaVermiPonics (also received the Shell Green Enterprise Awardee); Best Chevon; Production of Prio-Bio Inoculums for Animals and Fish (also received the FSSI Triple Bottom line Awardee); Bamsnacks (another recipient of the FSSI Triple Bottom line Awardee) and; T’nalak of the T’bolis.
