Celebrating Doreen: The Ateneo Honors Doreen Fernandez (1934-2002)

The Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings (ALiWW), the Department of Communication, the Department of English, the Fine Arts Program, and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, in cooperation with the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (OUDAR), present:

"Celebrating Doreen:  The Ateneo Honors Doreen Fernandez  (1934-2002)"

Dr. Doreen Gamboa Fernandez is a much beloved former faculty member of the Ateneo de Manila University. In the thirty years that she was with the university, she served as head of various units including the Japanese Studies Program, the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, the English Department, and the Communication Department. She was a benefactor, a member of various university committees, and also briefly the editor-in-chief of Philippine Studies. Most of all, however, she was a teacher, whose many students still remember with fondness.

Dr. Doreen Gamboa Fernandez

The relationship between the university and Fernandez was a long and fruitful one.

To commemorate her, a Mass will be celebrated on September 27, 2012, at 4:00 PM at the College Chapel (Ground Floor, Gonzaga Hall).

ALiWW will hold an exhibition of her life and works at the ALiWW reading room (Ground Floor, Rizal Library Special Collections building).  The exhibition will run from September 17 to November 9, 2012.  Visiting hours are 8-5M Monday to Friday, except all Fridays of September, and 8-12 noon, Saturday.  The formal opening of the exhibition will be on September 27, at 3:00 PM.

The English Department, with the support of the OUDAR, will be awarding of the winners of a food writing contest held in Doreen’s honor at the exhibit launch on September 27.  Recipients of the Doreen Gamboa Fernandez Xtreme Fellowship Award this year will also be introduced during the ceremonies.

The Interdisciplinary Studies Department, in cooperation with the Communication Department, has organized a duo-piano concert featuring her sister Della Besa and Annie de Guzman, with the special participation of Gilda Grande and Renan Prado, to be held on September 27, 2012, 4:30-6:00 PM, at the

Escaler Hall, Science Education Complex.  The concert is open to the public.

The Ateneo community is invited to all events in remembrance of a great woman.

Admission to all the events is free.   RSVP Raquel or Cherrie (426-6001, loc. 5340).

Donations to the University for the Doreen Gamboa Fernandez Endowed Fund for the Liberal Arts, est. 2001, are most welcome. The Fund has supported research and scholarly work by faculty members and given out professorial chair awards yearly from SY 2005-2006 to the present. Additional contributions to the fund will enable it to better support the second purpose of the endowment, which is creative work by students in the areas of Dr. Fernandez’s interests such as an annual creative writing competition among freshmen and writings related to food anthropology and criticism. Please contact the OUDAR at 426-6001, local 4084 and 4085.
